The War of 1812 in the Chesapeake
The Chesapeake Flotilla is a forgotten chapter in the War of 1812. With the onset of the war, British naval domination of the Chesapeake Bay brought with it unrelenting destruction. Captain Joshua Barney submitted a bold plan for the naval defense of the region. Tonight Donald Shomette, director of the archaeological excavation of the flotilla's flagship, offers a glimpse into the complex nature and incredible impact of the naval war of 1812 as it was played out on the turbid waters of the Patuxent River. Donald G. Shomette is a noted marine archaeologist, maritime historian, and the award winning author of sixteen books, including Flotilla published by Johns Hopkins University Press. He is the Director of Cultural Resource Management of Dunkirk, Maryland. $25 (1 session)
