Annapolis Star-Spangled 200 Conference

Oct. 24, 2011

This event was sponsored by Anne Arundel County War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission and Discover Annapolis Tours.

Highlights of the day

The Maryland State Archives hosted the morning session where attendees were welcomed by Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold and Maryland Archivist Edward C. Papenfuse.  Maryland War of 1812 author and historian Ralph Eshleman provided the background of 1812 resources in Annapolis.

The tour included stops at the following sites:

  • Fort Nonsense (the site of the only remnant of what was once a chain of forts to protect Annapolis during the War of 1812);
  • U.S. Naval Academy (home of several exhibits, monuments, and relics of the War of 1812 including the USNA Museum and the U.S. Navy Trophy Flag Collections); and
  • Maryland State House (used as an observation station for British movements on the Chesapeake Bay during the War of 1812).
